I hardly ever use brushes. I do everything with my hands, from mixing the paint to its application to the canvas. I like to have control over how much of it is pressed into the canvas and how much is wiped away. There has always been something distancing about the technicality of using brushes to me. By using my hands I feel more a part of what I’m doing.
Obviously I’m not one for clean lines however I am interested in order and balance. Part of what I like about my paintings is they look completed and usually it’s because there’s a visual balance to them.
When I start a painting, I don’t come to it with an exact image in mind. I usually just have a color or two that I can’t stop thinking about that I want to paint with. I guess you could call me a colorist. I roll out the canvas on my floor, spread out my paints, oilsticks, pencils or whatever I find, and then just start working.
The words I use in my paintings have little to do with their actual meanings and more often they are chosen because of the way they sound phonetically. I like the way sounds can affect an image, and how the viewer is the one to add that component by reading the text while looking at the painting.
I’m currently working in Prospect Heights Brooklyn. For more information on any of my paintings or to schedule a studio visit please feel free to contact me.
